Elon Musk is an Engineer, Entrepreneur and a Billionaire. Be it his work, his love life or tweets, he is always in the News. He is not the richest person on the planet but he is certainly loved more than most of the richer ones. As a person, he has an army of admirers and a group of people who just hate him.
As an Entrepreneur, he deserves respect and this is what this article is about.
Just to be clear, this article is not a fanfiction. You can love him or hate him but you can’t deny that his efforts for environment conservation are praiseworthy. Here are a few reasons why we can use some more personalities like him in the war for climate justice.
Tesla
Tesla is an American automotive and energy company owned by Elon Musk that specializes in electric car manufacturing. Now if we look a few years back, the electric cars were the stuff of memes. Most available were out of budget and those which were affordable were like toy cars running silently on the roads. They were small and couldn’t be used for long distances.
This is the reason why only a very tiny segment of the population ever bought one.
Now let’s talk about Tesla. One of the cheapest models of Tesla: Tesla 3 Standard Range Plus RWD is available at 38,990$ (USD, approx. 27.7 lakh INR). This car has a range of 386 km in full charge, can reach the speed from 0 to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds, has a top speed of 225 km/h, an overall safety rating of 5/5 and has an autopilot system which allows you to not to drive, while the car drives itself. All this with looks competing and winning over many luxurious cars that run on fossil fuel.
Here, Tesla solves the basic problem behind the slow rise of electric vehicles’ market:
How to attract customers who do not care enough about climate change.
These features along with the riddance of fossil fuel dependency can even make a ‘non-believer of climate change’ to book one. Sooner or later, fossil fuel-based cars have to go. Instead of pushing things to the extreme and then panic, it’s good that a company has already started a transition. Tesla is yet to come to India and there is a long way to go for us. We do have at least four fully-electric cars available in the country.
You can open your own electric vehicle company, thanks to Elon Musk
While the combustible engines are easier to make, the research on the electric batteries which can be used in the vehicles is limited. It can take years to develop an electric car from scratch that would have all the required specifications. Tesla is already a professional in the field. All of its three models are there in the market and have a good reputation.
It’s difficult to believe but all the patents of Tesla are free to use since 2014.
You can simply get their designs and use them in your car, doesn’t matter if you are a start-up or a multinational automobile brand. Mind-it, this is not a stunt but a pure sacrifice. Tesla is infamous for reporting losses in its quarterly results. Patents can bring you a lot of money but it restricts the use of that technology. Our world needs electric cars more than ever. This decision will benefit the whole Electric Automobile industry in the long run and that way, benefit the planet.
SpaceX
Space Exploration Technologies Corp., doing business as SpaceX, is a private American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company owned by Elon Musk, headquartered in Hawthorne, California.
Now you may ask, how SpaceX is beneficial to humanity?
These rockets use a lot of resources (less than others as they have reusable rockets), produce pollution and it is all about things exterior to our planet. It’s true to some extent. Now consider this situation, if everything goes as planned, Elon Musk should be able to colonize us on Mars. Although, at least for the initial phase, this community will only constitute of scientists and rich people at best,
but there will be humans on Mars!
Now, consider the worst-case scenario: what if, a huge asteroid strike us? Or the Yellow Stone supervolcano erupts? We can’t prevent such scenarios nor we can contain them. Earth will face a mass extinction and because we are not cockroaches or tardigrades, we will be so done! You can consider such scenarios hypothetical but they all happened in the past and can happen in the future too. A colony on Mars will mean that even if billions will perish, our species will still survive the doomsday.
Special Mentions
SolarCity is a subsidiary of Tesla that markets, manufactures and installs residential and commercial solar panels in the US. Imagine having solar panels on the roof, installed by a company, which will not only reduce your electricity bill but will also feed clean energy into the grid. It’s a win-win situation.
Tesla Model 3 cars are now leather-free. For people like me who completely avoid animal products like leather, it’s very difficult to avoid stuff which has some leather in it. Most companies do not provide customizations. So, you have to compromise doesn’t matter you take it or not. When the company takes responsibility, you don’t have to compromise or choose. TBH, it’s good for everyone.
Summary
Elon Musk is an influential and humorous person. It’s a welcome trait in today’s negativity filled environment full of political disasters and hate. His jokes can be as controversial as his life. There’s no doubt that he is loved by so many to the extent that he can easily create a huge cult (Trust me, I am on twitter and I follow him, so I know). His personal life and nature will always be a topic of debate but his actions, specifically, towards environmental preservation are commendable. We need many more people like him so that
we don’t have to go to Mars forced by a self-inflicted mass extinction.
